Hi Shazi,
Often people present to this clinic with severely cracked heels. I don't think I have had a case that wasn't caused by walking on hard surfaces such as the ground without shoes, especially were people are carrying excess weight. Callous forms on the heel to protect the foot and it gets harder as time goes on, often cracking and causing inflammation and often infection from bacterial entry. When the callous becomes hard it also causes tenderness underneath the callous, between the callous and the calcaneus, where you have bone pressing down and hard callous pressing up, sandwiched between is a very tender layer of tissue. Make the patient wear soft inner soles and stop walking around with bare feet and nature will do the rest. |
